Operations & Maintenance

Thor will be run from a new, state-of-the-art operations base at Thorsminde port

Unlike onshore wind turbines those out in the open sea cannot be serviced at just any time. High waves, wind and weather make our service technicians’ task complex. Therefore, short access routes, local partners and well-structured logistics are essential requirements for operating offshore wind farms, like Thor, economically.

Operations and maintenance base at Thorsminde port

RWE has chosen the Port of Thorsminde as the operations and maintenance base for Thor Offshore Wind Farm. A new service base is currently being built there, which will create 50–60 permanent jobs.

With its 2,300 square metres spread over three floors, the new state-of-the-art building will house the necessary facilities to ensure the efficient operations of Thor - including a control room, warehousing and office facilities.

The building is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, and from spring 2026, it will become the heart of the daily operations and maintenance for Thor. Service technicians, engineers and nautical personnel will work both in Thorsminde and at sea. To create a resilient and effective operational setup the combination of Crew Transfer Vessel and Helicopter operations is essential.

Thor offshore wind farm is located approximately 22 kilometres from Port of Thorsminde. The port therefore offers the shortest sea route and the fastest air route to the wind farm – making Thorsminde an ideal place for the new service building. RWE plans to maintain Thor from Thorsminde for at least 30 years.
